Sara Byala is a Senior Lecturer in Critical Writing at the University of Pennsylvania and the Associate Director of the Penn Global Documentary Institute (PGDI). South African by birth, Byala holds a PhD from Harvard University and a BA from Tufts University. 

 

Byala teaches critical writing seminars and global seminars, which include travel to Africa. She also lectures on African history in Penn’s History department and, of occasion, at the Wharton School and Lauder Institute.

 

Byala lives outside Philadelphia, USA, with her husband, three children, and dog.
